Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding and shaping behavior. It is based on the idea that all behavior is influenced by its environment and that by changing the environment, we can influence the behavior. ABA is used to address a variety of conditions, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Key Principles of ABA
Reinforcement
encouraging desired behaviors by rewarding with something positive, such as praise, toys, or activities, or by removing something unpleasant, such as homework or cleaning
Shaping
breaking down a large task into smaller steps and building up to independent completion
Extinction
stopping reinforcement of a problem behavior to reduce the occurrence of the behavior
Generalization
teaching skills in a variety of settings so that they can be used in everyday life
